I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel… (Galatians 1:6).
There are many brands of religion that may appeal to the self-centered nature of sinful man, but Christianity is not one of them. In fact, the true Christian Gospel is offensive to the sensibilities of man. For it strips us of every excuse we may have that in some way God owes us His favor. Therefore, it takes away all the pride we have to come humbly to Christ. The Gospel tells us that the only thing God owes us is His condemnation and judgment. Anything else is a gift of His mercy and grace and is completely undeserved.
Moreover, we can’t pick and choose which Gospel to believe, because there is only one true Gospel. Paul spoke about this in his letter to the Corinthians. He wrote,
but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God
(1 Corinthians 1:23-24).
The Jews thought the Messiah would come as the promised King, who would right every wrong being done to the Jews. They couldn’t imagine that their King would first have to appear as a lowly, suffering servant. And the Gentiles thought it was foolish to believe in a dead man, who suffered a humiliating crucifixion, as the promised One who would save the world.
Then, there is the matter of works of righteousness. It only seems fair that God would require us to act righteously before God would treat us as being righteous. But God turns that idea completely upside down. The ones God will save are those who despair over their inability to be righteous. They must know they have nothing good to offer God, and whatever God is pleased to do for them is sheerly out of His mercy and grace. In this way, and this way only, man is indebted to love his Savior and Lord forever, and God receives all the glory!
Though we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, we are still tempted to mix good works and faith together. And the Judaizers’ false gospel that deceived the Galatians combined the merits of Christ with the merits of those who became circumcised and obeyed the law. This was so egregious to Paul that he set out to write this stern epistle to the Galatian churches for their own eternal good.
