This week’s devotions are about the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. Today’s devotion focuses
on John 2:4-5.
When we try something for the first time, it is scary, uncomfortable, and maybe exciting all at the
same time. Maybe it’s a new restaurant or a trip to a new place. It may even be a new
experience we have wanted to try that pushes us out of our comfort zone. But just because we
want to try it doesn’t make it easier when the roller coaster is going up the hill or when it’s time
to jump out of the plane and pull the ripcord.
Jesus was fully human. It is weird to think of Him as having these emotions. Many of us think
He’s supposed to have no fear and be calmly prepared for every moment -- ready to jump in
and help in any situation. But we see in this story that’s not always the case.
Jesus is attending the wedding in Cana when His mother Mary sees the need for more wine and
informs Him about that need – knowing He is fully capable of doing something about it. Still, we
find Jesus hesitating. “What has this concern of yours to do with me, woman?” Jesus
asked. “My hour has not yet come.” (John 2:4)
For some reason, Jesus doesn’t immediately respond to Mary’s implied request. So, she does
what any good mom does and nudges her Son – not by telling Him what to do, but by telling the
servants at the wedding to pay attention to what Her Son tells them to do! “Do whatever he
tells you,” His mother told the servants. (John 2:5)
Mary took the initiative and told the servants He would be helping. God may have given her the
sense that His hour had indeed come. So, just like eagles and other birds make their nests
uncomfortable so the baby birds “choose” to leave, Mary gave her Son a “nudge” in the right
direction.
Jesus was going to have an amazing earthly ministry, and He knew it. We don’t know why He
hesitated here. But after His mother’s prompting, He went into action and performed His first
miracle.
We all need a nudge in the right direction from time to time. Who has given you a nudge in the
past? Who do you need to nudge today?
