And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” (Acts 10:15)
This past week I had the opportunity to speak at U.K.’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Our daughter, C.A., was in attendance with several of her friends from the U.K. Womens’ Golf Team. Pastor Ron may have 4 Granddaughters but Carrie and I have 8 Golf-Daughter’s whom we are blessed to know and love.
I’m a huge “F.C.A. Guy" because this organization changed my life 30 years ago. It provided some incredible mentors like Doug Flynn and Doug Pelfrey who were both professional athletes in Cincinnati and committed Christ-followers. Through FCA, I made formative friendships with other athletes who challenged me in my walk with Jesus. And as committed as I was to pursuing these brothers at F.C.A., there were other men in my life that I avoided altogether!
These were men that struck me as common, worldly, prideful, unkind, ungodly and somewhat intimidating. One such teammate that fit this description was a Freshman from Ohio named Jeremy Streck. Jeremy was A towering 6-foot-5, 313-pound offensive lineman whose locker was near mine. Whether in the locker room, the dining room or the weight room, if I saw Jeremy coming, I went the other way!
However, something happened in the Fall of 1997 that would disrupt the internal caste system that I had created in my heart. Max Appel, the area director of FCA came to me and said “Jimmy, I’m putting you in charge of the FCA huddle at the University of Kentucky.” And then he said, “Jimmy, FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian ANYBODY’S…and I need you to start investing in the lives of ALL Your teammates, especially those who don’t know Jesus.” It was a knife to my heart.
As you can imagine, my mind went immediately to Jeremy and other “common” guys like him that I had been intentionally avoiding. It was a spiritual crisis and its the same crisis that the Apostle Peter is dealing with in Acts 10. As we will discover, there is no such thing as a common Christian!
Today Read Acts Chapter 10
Q: Do you have internal assumptions of the kinds of people that God can or cannot use?
Q: Who have you been avoiding that you could begin praying for?
