This week we are looking at the shepherd’s response to the news of the birth of Jesus,
according to Luke 2:8-20.
In today’s verse, we hear about Mary’s response to the events, including the visit from the
shepherds: But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on
them. (Luke 2:19)
Mary had experienced so much change in her life in a very short time. She was having a child
she hadn’t planned on – which wasn’t exactly well-received in her community. Joseph married
her, and then they had to go to Bethlehem. Soon after they arrived in the tiny village of
Bethlehem, she gave birth to Jesus – with no support from family or even the community –
giving birth in a stable. She had dealt with a lot.
After Jesus was born, the shepherds came and affirmed her and Joseph’s understanding about
the significance of this little one. Her baby would be a Savior! Exciting news! The Messiah that
the people had been waiting for had finally arrived!
But in this moment, Mary’s reaction was unusual. She didn’t rejoice or celebrate. She simply
thought about everything taking place. She handled the moment in her own way – quietly,
humbly.
God impacts people in different ways in His timeline. We should not expect everyone to have
the same reaction that we do to Him. Some people unfortunately reject God or do not respond
to Him. Some people are very vocal and passionate when they encounter God. And some take
a while to think about what their encounter with God means and what to do with it.
When we minister to others, we may not see the immediate impact of our efforts. We may not
even see the impact of our ministry at all – yet we are still called to do it!
Paul writes this encouraging word to the believers in Philippi: He who began a good work in
you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)
Who in your circle of friends is still meditating on what to do with the gospel message? Are you
continuing to joyfully share the Gospel and give others something to ponder?
