...but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14 NASB)
Having put away the past, Paul turns his focus to what lies ahead. Paul, who had spent some time in Ephesus and would have been familiar with, or perhaps even witnessed, the ancient Olympic games, turns in this passage to the familiar metaphor of a runner competing in a race. The picture he paints here is of a runner pressing forward, striving with all his might, leaning with all he has toward the finish line. Consider what Paul wrote to the Corinthians about running the race:
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. (1 Corinthians 9:24 NASB)
The objective is to finish the course, to run through to the end, to be in the game through the final whistle. There is a zeal, a level of commitment demonstrated in Paul’s pursuit of the goal. For the Apostle Paul, formerly known as Saul of Tarsus, it was a non-negotiable that he would pursue God’s calling with his whole being, with every bit as much zeal, and perhaps even more zeal, than he demonstrated in persecuting the church.
When I read this passage, I was reminded of a quote from The Empire Strikes Back. There is a conversation between Luke and Yoda, where Luke says, “All right, I'll give it a try” and Yoda responds “No. Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try.” I want to suggest this is the message Paul is communicating here. We ought not just try to pursue the goal for which we have been called; we reach for the goal with the determination to grasp it. The admonition here is not to make a half-hearted effort; it is to pursue the upward call of God with our whole being. There is nothing in our life that should command more attention, be given more focus, than pursuing the purpose for which we have been called in Christ.
Let me leave you with a question today: Are you in it to win it?
