Not that I have already grasped it all or have already become perfect, but I press on if I may also take hold of that for which I was even taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet… (Philippians 3:12-13 NASB)
One of the best ways to learn how to succeed at a specific task or discipline is to find someone who does it well and follow their example. Even better than following someone’s example from a distance is having the opportunity to spend time with them and learn first-hand the secrets of their success. That is the opportunity that the Apostle Paul provides us here in his letter to the church at Phillipi. Writing from a Roman prison, Paul shares the secret to his success in the race of life and encourages those who hear or read these words to follow his example.
Paul, the most prolific writer in the New Testament, begins by sharing a bit of perspective. It has been some 30 years since the day Paul met the Savior on the road to Damascus. Paul has been stoned and left for dead, imprisoned multiple times, shipwrecked, journeyed throughout the known world sharing the Gospel, established churches, discipled Timothy and others, and the list goes on. You might expect Paul to say, “Enough! I’ve done my part; I’ve had more than my share of hardship; I’m finished.” Perhaps those in Paul’s inner circle would have encouraged him to slow down and let others pick up the slack.
Despite all that he has seen and experienced, Paul offers a very humble, authentic, and perhaps
unexpected perspective; I haven’t made it. Paul understood that he had been grasped, or laid hold of by
Christ for the purpose of being conformed to His image. The work of redemption is complete, he has
been taken hold of by Christ Jesus, but the work of sanctification, or maturity, is not yet complete. So,
Paul says, I will press on to the finish.
It is the perspective that would allow Paul to say at the end of his life: I have fought the good fight, I
have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me,
but also to all who have loved His appearing (2 Timothy 4:7-8 NASB).
