This week’s theme is “The God Who Sees Us - You are valuable”.
Several years ago, I was a low-level volunteer at an Easter egg hunt at church. Weather drove the event inside to a basketball court where we used random improvised objects as hiding places for the eggs. Turnout was very high, which when coupled with the confined space, resulted in what I can best describe as an “energetic” (but good-natured and fun) event.
We would setup the eggs roughly every fifteen minutes, and then a wave of kids grouped by age would be released to collect them in a scene vaguely reminiscent of tiny piranhas detecting a slow cow crossing a river. At the end of each session, especially for the youngest kids, there would always be a couple of stragglers left wandering the scene, no eggs in their baskets, wondering what had just happened. (I would say they were shell-shocked, but that would just be too terrible a pun).
I empathized with the parents trying to console those empty-handed kids, so I hatched (sorry) a plan. Each time we’d reset the eggs before the next wave, I’d tuck a couple into each of my sleeves. When the court was stripped bare of eggs, I’d seek out a dazed toddler, kneel, put an egg at their feet, and ask if they wanted to “find” it. If you ever want to see gratitude on a young parent’s face, be the random stranger who ensured that their timid toddler scored at least one Easter egg.
I’m not saying any of this to make me look good; I had more fun than the toddlers I helped. My observation is this: in a time of need, it’s nice to have someone looking out for us – someone who has both resources and a willingness to help. David sought out a permanently injured Mephibosheth to show kindness to him.
“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “since I intend to show you kindness because of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul’s fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.”
(2 Samuel 9:7 (HCSB)
God sees those who need Him - and we all need Him. His grace and comfort may not look like the egg we’re seeking, and it may not even be in the area we’re looking, but it’s there. Seek and you shall find.
