For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.” (2 Chronicles 16:9 ESV)
These are words spoken by Hanani to Asa, king of Judah, after he had made an alliance with the king of Syria to go up against Basha, the king of Israel. Prior to this, Asa had defeated the Ethiopians and Libyans, huge armies with many chariots and horsemen (v. 8), by relying on the Lord. On this occasion, Asa has forgotten the watchful eye of the Lord that watches over His people to protect them, strengthen them, and guard His covenant with them. A foolish mistake that would prove costly.
It is a decision much like this (Sarai’s decision that God must need some help fulfilling the promise of an heir) that results in Hagar fleeing to Egypt. It has been ten years since the promise of an heir and a multitude of descendants (Genesis 15), and Abram and Sarai are not getting any younger. So, Sarai decides to follow the customs of the cultures around them -- to give her servant Hagar to Abram as a second wife or surrogate. How could Sarai and Abram think that sort of arrangement could ever work out without some sort of conflict?
It’s easy to get ourselves into trouble when we forget about God’s watchful eye and care for us. How many red flags do we dismiss or ignore when we decide that we have a good plan to help accomplish God’s purpose in our lives? The trouble we can create by acting hastily or foolishly can have long lasting impacts. Consider this: the conflict between the descendants of Isaac and Ishmael (the son of Hagar) continues to the present day.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
(Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT)
If you are in a spot where you don’t see how God’s promise or calling is going to be fulfilled in your life, don’t take things into your own hands. Don’t act hastily based on what makes sense to you or based on what you see in the culture around us. Lean wholly on the Lord and allow him to direct you.
“It is a foolish thing to lean on a broken reed, when we have the rock of ages to rely upon”
