The second angel surrounding the events of the nativity paid an unexpected visit to a young girl in Nazareth.
Six months after the angel appeared to Zechariah,
the angel Gabriel was sent by God to… a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph... The virgin’s name was Mary. (Luke 1:26-27)
There had been a centuries-long absence of recorded angelic activity, and now we have the angel Gabriel appearing for the second time in only six months. An important thing to note about God’s angels is that they are sent by Him – they are not acting on their own. They act only at the command of God – and often in the role of a messenger.
As angels often do, Gabriel tells Mary not to be afraid and then says,
“Listen carefully: you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son…
(Luke 1:31)
Don’t you just love how Gabriel tells young Mary to “listen carefully”? The same Gabriel who sternly rebuked Zacharias with the words I AM GABRIEL is now gently speaking to the one who will carry in her womb the Son of God. He knows he is delivering a world-changing message to a very young girl, so it is imperative that Mary understands she must be a very careful listener. Can you imagine how carefully Gabriel is uttering his words – slowly, distinctly, so nothing can be misunderstood?
Carefully, slowly, distinctly, he tells her how it will come about:
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the Power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.”
(Luke 2:35)
Before sending Gabriel on this assignment, God already knew Mary would need someone to confide in, another woman who could fathom with her the unfathomable. So, Gabriel delivered the next part of his message – telling Mary about her “past her prime” relative, Elizabeth, who was also unexpectedly expecting! This was the someone Mary needed – the someone who would understand.
And then… the angel utters the final words of his message to young Mary:
“For with God nothing will be impossible…”
And the angel disappeared.
(Luke 1:37-38)
Gabriel did what he came to do and didn’t need to hang around. He no doubt went right back to the throne room of God for his next assignment. What he left behind was a young girl who probably had some more questions, but he also left her with the assurance that with God nothing is impossible.
He carefully and clearly delivered the message God had given him. That was his mission.
You too have a message to deliver. Are you fulfilling your mission?
