In the 1960’s, there was a popular musical duo that came to be called The Righteous Brothers. Their name had nothing to do with a faith experience. The name came from a group of black Marines at the El Toro Marine Base who started calling them “righteous brothers.” At the end of a performance, one in the audience shouted, “That was righteous, brothers!” – using the slang definition of righteous, meaning genuine or excellent. It was a compliment but had nothing to do with a relationship with Christ. Some of the wonderful words of our faith are sometimes oddly repurposed – and often misunderstood.
The Chinese language is a language of symbols – and the symbol in their language for the word “righteous” is such a beautiful visual of what righteousness means to the believer. The word combines two symbols: one of the symbols signifies ME, and the other symbol signifies LAMB. To create the word “righteous,” the symbol for LAMB is placed over the symbol for ME – giving us a visual definition of the term. So, to put it into words, when our heavenly Father gazes upon us in love, what He sees is His Lamb covering all our sins – He sees the righteousness of His Son, not the imperfections of you and me.
That knowledge became Paul’s joy! He wanted to be found in Him [Christ] [believing and relying on Him], not having any righteousness of my own derived from [my obedience to] the Law and its ritual, but [possessing] that [genuine righteousness] which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith (Philippians 3:9 Amp).
Paul made it clear he now knew that his righteousness was NOT from his obedience to the law nor from his adherence to the traditions of his faith. He had discovered that he could never attain righteousness on
his own – through striving, straining, determining, or persevering in his own strength. He had done all that. He now knew that genuine righteousness came only from God on the basis of faith.
Many of you have been striving and attempting to be righteous on your own. Paul’s confession is meant to challenge you to quit that futile effort; and instead, believe the truth: the LAMB of God covers the imperfections of ME. Join with other believers today – others who know we are “clothed in His righteousness alone.” May this be your joy too: because of Christ, we can all be righteous brothers – and sisters.
