All my kids have enjoyed dressing up in their favorite costumes over the years. By simply changing their outfit, they are transported to worlds full of dinosaurs, astronauts, bears, cowboys, princesses, and tea parties. For a short period of time, they are transformed in their own minds simply by changing what they wear.
What if I told you the gospel has a similar application in our lives, though it isn’t make-believe or a figment of our imagination? Paul tells us to put off our old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24)
Paul is instructing us on how to walk in a manner worthy or our calling (4:1) with three simple commands. One, put off the old self (described in verses 17-19). Two, be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Three, put on the new self. In these three commands, there is a connection between what we wear and our mindset. We are not to just change outfits, thinking we can change the internal by changing the external. At the same time, we aren’t just to think differently about ourselves without acting differently.
To help us understand how we can apply this, notice the new truth we are to know and believe about ourselves in verse 24. We are created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. The gospel first changes us on the inside, then God gives us the new outfit to put on. He isn’t asking us to dream up or create this new wardrobe, he has given it to us in Jesus.
When kids play make-believe, they get the connection between what they wear and how they act. We are not living in a fantasy, but the connection between our spiritual minds and spiritual attire is just as impactful. Know who you are in Christ, then put on that new self every day. When temptation comes, make the choice of faith to renew your mind and walk in your new self, the self that was bought by Jesus.
What will you wear today?
