For I have told you often before, and I say it again now with tears in my eyes, there are many who walk along the Christian road who are really enemies of the cross of Christ. Their future is eternal loss, for their god is their appetite: they are proud of what they should be ashamed of; and all they think about is this life here on earth. (Philippians 3:18-19)
After encouraging the Philippian believers to follow the pattern of his life and the lives of other godly people, he now gives a rather dire warning: there are people who walk along the Christian pathway but are actually enemies of the cross! These are not necessarily people who are openly opposed to the Gospel – that would be too obvious! These are people who pretend to be followers of Jesus – deceiving others (and perhaps themselves) – showing up at Christian occasions and doing Christian things with Christian people. We might call them non-mentors or mentors who show us how NOT to live as a Christ- follower.
Instead of eternal life, these folks will experience eternal loss – for three reasons that Paul shares:
1- Their god is their appetite. They have an insatiable desire for those things that give physical pleasure. They want more, more, more – whatever they have, it is not enough.
2- They are proud of what they should be ashamed of. Instead of feeling shame and sadness for allowing sinful behavior to creep into their lives, these folks puff up their chests and brag about what “they got by with,” smile when reflecting on past sins, or make light of their sin as if it wasn’t a big deal. Dear believers, it IS a big deal -- we should be ashamed of our sin – that’s what leads to repentance and recognition of our need for a Savior.
3- All they think about is this life here on earth. Instead of fixing their eyes on Jesus and having an eternal focus, these imposters think only about earthly things – recognition, sense of importance, money, possessions, beautiful appearance -- things that will disappear and be totally unimportant in eternity. Their worries are all about their earthly future – not realizing it’s a short-lived future – instead of investing their energy in their eternal future.
Do you know someone who is living the lifestyle of these earth-focused mortals? Please note how Paul felt about those people. He didn’t flippantly imply that they were getting exactly what they deserved. No! He loved them deeply – but their lifestyle and their thumbing their noses at God’s ways made him weep.
Do you love them? Are you weeping for them? Are you interceding for them?
