The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you, in his
love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)
In Zephaniah 3, God’s powerful love is displayed through the redemption of Israel. God’s people had
turned their hearts away from Him, but He still promised to save and rejoice over them.
The love a parent has for their child is just a reflection of the infinite love God has for us. When a five-
year-old willfully does something wrong, their parents are not going to leave and forget about them
because their child made a mistake. No, out of love they will discipline their child and help them learn,
because that is what is best for them. Even though that punishment can be hard, the first place the child
looks for comfort and a hug is in their parents.
This is the same way with God. When we turn our backs on Him and live in sin, we are not alone. God is
with us, and He disciplines us out of love to bring us closer to Him. In our weakness, God is strong; He is
a Mighty Warrior who saves us from our sin, and we can find comfort in Him.
In Zephaniah 3:17 we are reminded that God has not forgotten about us; he gives us three promises of
His loving character: He will take great delight in us, He will no longer rebuke us, and He will rejoice over
us with singing.
1. God will take great delight in us. We are all image bearers of God and are His children. We bring joy to
our Father when we spend time with Him. God created us with purpose and delights in us when we
glorify Him.
2. God will no longer rebuke us. We all have turned away from God and felt the shame of our sin. Even
in our brokenness, God sacrificed His one and only Son to redeem all creation. Jesus paid the price that
we owed and washed our sins white as snow. No matter what we have done in the past, we can find
comfort in our Father because when He looks at our heart, He sees Jesus.
3. God will rejoice over us with singing. Just as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will the Lord
rejoice over His church. God’s love is displayed in the overflowing joy He has for His children. No matter
what season you’re in, you have a loving Father who wants to embrace you with unending joy and
singing.
