And of Israel: Of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, and Izziah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazer, and Malchijah, and Benaiah. And of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jermoth, and Elijah… (Ezra 10:25-26)
Sometimes when we’re reading through the Bible and arrive at a passage like this one, we skip over the names – especially when most of them are unfamiliar to us. And this isn’t the first time a lengthy list of difficult-to-pronounce names is found in the Bible. But since God speaks to us any time we open His word, even a list of such names can speak to you, as it did me.
The Bible confirms that God is the originator of names or naming if you will. In Genesis 2:7, we learn that God formed man – Adam. Then God tasked Adam with naming all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals (Genesis 2:20). Even the name of each living creature is important to God. And when Adam set eyes on the woman God had chosen for him, he wasted no time but to name her “woman” -- for she was taken out of man (Genesis 2:23b). We know her as Eve.
Dear believer in Christ, I want you to know that God knows your name too. He knows you intimately, and He desires that you know Him intimately too. Here are a few verses I want you to consider as you think about the awesome privilege of being known by name by the Almighty God:
“See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”
(Isaiah 49:16a)
Now this is what the Lord says – the One who created you, Jacob, and the One who formed you, Israel – “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.”
(Isaiah 43:1)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
(Jeremiah 1:5)
And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”
(Exodus 33:17)
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”
(John 10:14)
My dear brothers and sisters, God really does know your name. As summer days begin to turn toward fall, let’s determine to walk more intimately with our Lord. Let’s strive to keep His Name on our lips and in our hearts as we seek to know Him better – with full confidence that our names are always in His heart.
