“If you love me, you will keep my commands… The one who doesn’t love me will not
keep my words.” (John 14:15,24)
The seventh reality of the Blackaby and King book, Experiencing God, is this: you come to know
God by experience as you obey Him, and He accomplishes His work through you.
This truth dovetails very nicely into my experience as the founder and former Executive Director
of Lexington Rescue Mission. I will try to share a few of my insights into the blessings of
obedience that I have experienced along the way.
Let’s first review the relationship that exists between love and obedience. The book,
Experiencing God, states:
There are many examples in the Bible that illustrate the above principles. Take the story of
Gideon, for example. As a leader of the Israelites, he won a decisive victory over a Midianite
army despite a vast numerical disadvantage, leading a troop of 300 "valiant" men. Gideon had
gathered more than 32,000 men to fight, but God directed Gideon to send them all home,
except for 300 who lapped water with their hands to their mouths.
But God had an even stranger plan in place. The soldiers wouldn’t even have to invade or
attack the enemy to wipe out the Midianites. He had them create as much noise as possible by
blaring trumpets and smashing jars. By obeying God, Gideon defeated 135,000 Midianites using
300 men, 300 torches, and 300 trumpets. God used Gideon to do what only He could do.
When I felt God calling me to start a rescue mission in Lexington, I knew this would be an
impossible task unless God would do it through me. I lived in Columbus, Indiana, and I didn’t
know anyone in Lexington, and I had very little money. I knew that money wouldn’t last long
since small rescue missions had average budgets of $250,000 or more. My wife and I prayed
over the decision, and I remember thinking that I would rather fail doing what I believed God
was calling me to do rather than disobey God by doing nothing. There have been plenty of
twists and turns; but by God’s faithfulness, the Mission grew every year I was there.
