So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6)
Have you ever felt God calling you to do something that felt uncomfortable? Living on purpose for God’s
mission often takes us out of our comfort zone. Just a few examples from the Bible include: Abraham
moving from the familiarity of his homeland to the land of Canaan, Moses being paralyzed with fear at
the thought of standing and speaking before Pharaoh, David facing Goliath with a slingshot, and Paul
doing much of his ministry and most of his writing while in prison. These biblical characters have three
things in common: they were tested, they trusted in the Lord’s provision, and their lives were
transformed.
1. Each character faced a circumstance that tested their faith. They were living out God’s purpose for
them in ways that did not make sense to the world. However, the issue for us is never about the
metaphorical giant or jail cell; instead, it’s about whose voice we are listening to.
2. Each biblical figure placed their trust in Lord. They overcame the fear and doubt because God was
with them, and His presence overshadows all opposition. The beautiful promise God makes in Hebrews
13:5 is that “He will never leave us or forsake us” -- giving us confidence that He will be our helper in
the moments our faith is tested. So, when our trust is fully in the Lord, the voices around us become
powerless; and we can say “yes” to God’s plan for us.
3. All these stories end with transformed lives. Abraham laid the foundation for God’s people of Israel,
Moses freed Israel from slavery and led them toward the Promised Land, David defeated Goliath, and
Paul is still one of the most influential theologians. The reality is that spiritual growth and
transformation happen when we trust God on the other side of our comfort zone.
Dear Lord, thank You for being my helper and giving me the confidence to live on purpose for You. I trust
that You are with me in every circumstance and are working it for Your glory.
