The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Listen
carefully…” (Luke 1:30-31a Amp).
When angels drop in on someone in the Bible, the first words they often speak are “Fear not” or
something along that line. Angels do not look anything like our cute figurines – they are strong,
masculine, and fearsome beings! It was not a routine thing for angels to appear to people – just
as it isn’t today. We might think it was more common than it was, since earlier in this same
chapter we find Gabriel paying a visit to Zechariah, the future father of John the Baptist.
True to form, Gabriel first tells young Mary not to be afraid. He needed to help get her pounding
heart under control and restore her normal breathing pattern so she could absorb what came
next.
First, he told her she had found favor with God. The Phillips translation of this verse has Gabriel
telling her, “God loves you dearly” (Luke 1:30). I love that! Don’t you just know that Mary
probably needed to recall those words throughout her time of mothering the Messiah. Even
when her heart would one day be torn apart in grief, she would need to remember that God
loved her dearly.
Second, Gabriel told Mary to “Listen carefully.” Imagine Gabriel stooping down on Mary’s
level, making perfect eye contact with her -- gently holding her hands, encouraging her to take a
deep breath and focus on him – letting the world around them become a big blur. After he said
those words (and perhaps took a deep breath himself), he prepared to give her a message that
would change not only her world – but our world too!
Before we get to the message, let’s get personal:
1 – Do you realize that God loves you dearly too – in good times and in terribly tough times?
When everything is smooth sailing and also when the storms roll in?
2 – When you sit with God’s Word or listen to a sermon or spend time alone in prayer, are you
taking time to listen carefully? Imagine God Himself holding your hands in His, making strong
eye contact with you, and urging you to listen – listen for affirmation, listen for conviction of your
sin, listen for what He’s calling you to do next.
Like Mary, we are never to forget how deeply we are loved. And… like Mary, we need to
carefully listen to the voice of God.
