I was baptized on a Tuesday night.
I had understood what it meant to be a Christian for a while. Most of my other friends at church
had been baptized, but I hadn’t. I was mostly anxious about going in front of everyone and the
actual baptism process, and no one talked to me about it. (Our baptism ministry does a great
job of addressing these concerns.)
When my younger sister decided to get baptized, I decided to be baptized too – so we were
both baptized at the same time. However, she decided on a Tuesday that she wanted to be
baptized and didn’t want to wait until Sunday. So, we got everyone together and had the
baptism at the church that night. We read today’s passage at that ceremony:
As they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, “Look,
there’s water. What would keep me from being baptized?” Philip said, “If you believe with
all your heart, you may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of
God.” So he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into
the water, and he baptized him. (Acts 8: 36-38)
Philip had just explained the good news of Jesus to the man, and the man was ready! They
were far away from a town; yet the man understood he needed to be baptized. He saw water
and asked, “What would keep me from being baptized?” Philip realized nothing was keeping
him from being baptized, so he did it!
We have so many opportunities to minister and serve. And all we need are the good news of
Jesus (us), someone who needs to hear (someone else), and an opportunity to hear it (right
now). Even if we are only serving them, that’s an opportunity to minister to them. We don’t need
to make it harder. Sometimes we just need to realize we are the opportunity God has provided
and do it!
Look around and keep your eyes open. Who are you ministering to and not even realizing it?
