The other day I messed up at work. I reminded everyone we had a project due next month that wasn’t on the schedule. Everyone scrambled, we rescheduled meetings, and we had a team meeting at the end of the day. And then… I discovered that I misread a requirement, and the project didn’t need to be done until the end of the year! Everyone was relieved, but I was embarrassed that I had caused such a disruption.
The very next day, one of my team members came to me distressed -- concerned that he had sent an email to the wrong group of people. He wanted to know if I could help. We worked everything out in ten minutes, the issue was resolved – and his relief was obvious! He told me he was so worried about making mistakes and wondered if I had ever done anything like that. I was able to mention that I had -- and had done so the previous day!
It's easy for us to look at challenges and difficulties (and mess-ups) and focus only on how they affect us or only on our response. We lose focus on solving the issue and on seeing how God just might be at work in it all. I have found that God is always using us to guide others. In this case, the very next day after my own mess-up, I was given the opportunity to tell my story and provide encouragement to my team member. Most of the time, we don’t get the immediate opportunity to connect with someone because of our own circumstances – but we are still called to lead, be honest, and be faithful.
Several verses in Proverbs call us to treasure the wisdom of others. Also, we are all knowledgeable or uniquely abled in some way, and we should look for opportunities to share that with others.
A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel. (Proverbs 1:5)
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will suffer harm. (Proverbs 13:20)
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
(Proverbs 27:17)
Who is someone in your life that can provide you with wisdom? And what is some ability or unique insight that you can humbly share with others?
