“God gave you two ears and one mouth, so you should listen twice as much as you talk.” Though often said by
frustrated parents, it is good advice… especially for leaders.
David faced a difficult leadership challenge in 1 Samuel 23. The Philistines were fighting against the Jewish city of
Keilah. People came to David looking for answers, so he did what a good leader should do. David inquired of the
Lord, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” (1 Samuel 23:2)
David didn’t make a rash decision. He decided to listen to God before speaking to his people. This is a good
example for all of us, no matter where we are leading. Whether we are parents, leaders at work, or a leader-in-
training, we begin by listening to God. What does that look like?
especially leadership. We may not find an exact answer to every situation, but we will find principles and
commands that apply.
Through His Spirit and His Word, God will lead us in the right direction.
provide wisdom through the counsel of godly men and women. As Proverbs 12:15 says, The way of a fool is
right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.
If I am honest, seeking the advice of others can be difficult due to my pride. This is especially true if the topic is
something I think I should know. I have to remind myself that seeking counsel is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of good leadership.
How are you doing in these three aspects of listening to God? Remember, God gave each of us two ears and one
mouth, so let’s all make sure we are listening to what He has to say.
