The summer of 2022 brought a great cinematic experience with the release of Top Gun: Maverick. For those of us
who grew up loving the original, the sequel was highly anticipated. As expected, the movie was packed with action, a few corny lines, and many edge-of-your-seat moments.
One of those moments came when Maverick, the movie’s protagonist, was fired from leading the elite Navy pilots as they prepared for an impossible mission. No matter how much he trained them, they could not complete the difficult flight route in their training. They thought it was impossible. That was until Maverick secretly climbed into a plane to fly this impossible training mission himself. It wouldn’t be a true Hollywood blockbuster if he failed, so of course he finished it in record time. This earned him his leadership position back; but more importantly, it convinced everyone the mission was possible.
Leading by example is an indispensable leadership principle. We see this in the life of David as he led his men to
fight the Philistines at Keilah. The men were afraid to go, which highlights the importance of a few key words in the narrative. And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their
livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. (1 Samuel 23:5). David
didn’t just send his men into battle; he led by example by going with them.
Jesus led by example in a different battle. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so
that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the
sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are
being tempted. (Hebrews 2:17-18)
God has not remained on the sidelines in our battle over sin and death. Jesus, being fully God, took on flesh to fight on our behalf. He faced temptation yet never sinned; he suffered but never quit; he died but rose victoriously. This qualifies Him to lead us through the battles we face.
When you face temptation, do you turn to Jesus or fight on your own?
When you face difficulty and suffering, do you rely on Jesus or your own strength?
You may not have any formal leadership roles in your life. But your greatest leadership could be leading others to
trust in Jesus. You don’t need to be a maverick, just a faithful follower of Jesus.
