He went for a walk with his children every day. He listened to their stories. He heard their dreams. He shared wisdom. It was a special time.
But, one day they didn’t show up. He could see them hiding. He called for them, “Adam? Eve?”
They had sinned and were ashamed. They didn’t want to walk with Him.
Things were no longer as they were meant to be. The relationship was broken.
So broken that He had to walk with them again. He had to show them the way back. It required sacrifice; but His love for His children was so great, He didn’t mind.
He walked with them for thirty-three years. While He was here, things were as they were supposed to be again for those who were fortunate enough to walk with Him.
He taught, performed miracles, and explained as much as He could to those who would listen.
He prepared His followers for what was to happen:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14: 1-3, NIV)
Shortly thereafter, Jesus gave His life to restore the relationship broken by Adam and Eve. He didn’t stay dead. He came back to life, and His followers finally understood. He told them to tell others about Him and promised to return.
And then, His time with us was up.
It's been about 2000 years since the day the disciples stood gawking at the sky. And we still wait for His return.
Knowing that Jesus is coming again, how then shall we live in 2023? How does this knowledge change or not change your life?
Every day the same God who walked with Adam and Eve longs to walk alongside you. Ask Him how Christ’s return should impact your life this year. He will answer.
