In our journey through the gospel of John, we arrive at the powerful words of Jesus found in John 3:14-15: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” In this profound statement, Jesus unveils a powerful truth: He is the sole source of our salvation.
To fully appreciate His declaration, we must turn back to the Old Testament and the story of Moses and the bronze serpent in Numbers 21:4-9. The Israelites, weary from their journey through the wilderness, began to grumble against God and Moses. In response to their ingratitude and sin, God sent venomous snakes among them, and many were bitten and died. Yet God, in His mercy, provided a means of healing: He instructed Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a pole. Those who looked at the bronze serpent were miraculously healed from their snakebites.
This story powerfully foreshadows the work of Jesus. Just as the bronze serpent was lifted up for the salvation of the Israelites, Jesus, the Son of Man, was destined to be lifted up on the cross for the sins of humanity. The act of looking at the bronze serpent symbolized faith—an acknowledgment of need and a response to God’s provision. Today, Jesus calls us to look to Him in faith, understanding that He is the ultimate solution to our sin and alienation from God.
The critical implication here is that our salvation rests squarely on Jesus alone. He was “lifted up” for our sins, bearing the weight of our transgressions so that we might receive the gift of eternal life. As Jesus stated in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” There is no other path to salvation; faith in Christ is the only way to experience the fullness of life He offers.
As you reflect on this powerful message, consider your own life. Are you looking to Jesus alone for salvation? In a world rife with distractions and false securities, let us remember that true healing and eternal life come only through faith in Him.
Jesus is not just a historical figure or a moral teacher; He is our Savior. As we gaze upon the cross, let us remember the bronze serpent in the wilderness and recognize that by looking to Jesus in faith, we can experience the transformative power of His grace. Trust in Him, for He alone is our source of salvation.
