I looked out the window of my new Jeep Grand Cherokee and saw this college-age young man admiring my car. I smiled to myself. It’s the rims. Every man I show the car to compliments the tires. I had already purchased the car and didn’t even notice the rims until my dad pointed them out. Yikes, they’re huge! Still, the vehicle is a thing of beauty.
The journey to this particular SUV was not easy. It used to be that all cars had the same engine but today there are electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel combustion models. And don’t even get me started on the interior. I really thought I was going to buy a hybrid. It would have been the sensible thing to do, and I am very practical. However, sitting in my garage might be one of the last manufactured V6 engines. All my YouTube research went right out the window when I drove this car!
Love is blind. When I get in my car, I feel downright powerful. My other car was small and zippy. There is nothing in those two words that resembles this SUV. It is sleek and powerful.
Then… I had my quiet time. Sometimes I feel like two people, one who loves the Lord with all her heart and the other who feels a deep satisfaction when she thinks about the car in her garage. I have always loved that David became a king. I thought if he can be king then what in the world is wrong with driving an Italian-American SUV?
Then I read…
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
I felt truly disheartened but then I reread the earlier verses:
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
(1 John 2:1-2)
Relief! I’m far from perfect, but I also know that absolutely everything amazing in my life comes from the Lord. I know my salvation and real power come from seeking, knowing, and loving Him first! The car will have to take a back seat.
