When I went to write this devotion, I was not sure what I wanted to write about. I prayed. I kept praying. And I continued to pray. At one point I started to get frustrated. Being a college student, I saw the deadline and the blank document in front of me and began to stress. Finally, out of nowhere, God laid Exodus 3:14 on my heart.
This verse reads, God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
Those five simple words of “I AM who I AM” hit me hard.
When I was praying about this devotion, I was praying for some big theological passage that I could write a big devotion about. After God placed this on my heart, I realized the simplicity of God is just as beautiful as the complexity of God. Having faith in something we cannot see or touch can be tough, but believing in a God so grand that he can be referred to as “I AM” is amazing.
There are things that we won't know about God, about our world, about heaven and even about our own lives, but knowing that God is the “I AM” of this universe brings so much peace to me.
A little fun fact about me is I am an over thinker, even about things that don’t matter -- like why “good morning” is two words, but “goodnight” is one. I often find myself in these rabbit holes about the complexity of the world, but more importantly, about God. There are things I research and think about that ultimately I will never know.
Very rarely do I think about the simplicity of God. In my mind, nothing can be simple, and everything has to be complicated. How about five words that say, “I AM who I AM”? I think that is as simple as it gets. We need to be reminded of the goodness, holiness, and beauty of God. This is what we need to know and all we need to know here on earth. God is the “I AM”.
I encourage you to take a simple look at things around you this weekend. Do not try to create explanations for things that don't need explanations. God is the Creator, the Father in heaven, and ultimately the great “I AM”.
