I love Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Chapter 3 has been the most influential section of the Bible in my life, specifically verses 7-10. This chapter was so important to me that I memorized it during college.
But I also love Philippians for the theme of perseverance. Consider some of the verses below:
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)
Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. (Philippians 1:27)
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own…I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12, 14)
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)
Paul also gives us encouragement to persevere in our passage for this week. We are to be
holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. (Philippians 2:16)
Paul knew the difficulties faced by the believers in Philippi. We face similar difficulties as we live “in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.” In such times, we must be intentional to hold fast to Christ. What does this look like, practically?
One, be reminded of God’s promises. Keep verses such as Philippians 1:6, John 10:28, and Romans 8:37-39 memorized or written down so you can see them regularly.
Two, stay active with your church community. As Hebrews 10:25 says, we should be “encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Three, grow in fellowship with God through prayer and His word. As Paul tells us in 2 Timothy 1:12, it is his intimate knowledge of God that gives him confidence to persevere:
I know whom I have believed and am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.
Take some time to evaluate how you are doing with these three ways to hold fast to Christ. And if you have a few extra minutes, read Philippians in one sitting to note all the references to perseverance.
