“Have you understood all these things?” They answered him, “Yes.” “Therefore,” he said to them, “every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom treasures new and old.” (Matthew 13:51-52)
Have you ever been sitting in class, maybe daydreaming, when the teacher says something directly to you? “Have you been listening to what I have been saying?” “Yes,” you answer, hoping that the teacher doesn’t ask anything further.
The last parable we’ll consider this week puts the disciples in the middle of the story! Jesus wants to make sure this special instruction is not misunderstood or forgotten.
After asking the opening question, and hearing their response, Jesus says, “Therefore,” which sets up everything that is to follow. This time of teaching the disciples in parables is ending; and since they have told Jesus they are tracking with Him, He now sums up their lesson in, what else, another parable.
This time, however, Jesus places the disciples in the kingdom of heaven now, not some day in the future, but now. This is a great reminder that the kingdom of heaven is something we can experience today, and more and more as we give up our own transient and temporary treasures to pursue this hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44), this pearl of great price (Matthew 13:45-46).
The disciples are referred to as being “like” the owners of homes who provide and care for those who come under their care. Jesus encourages them to remember all the things they have been taught, “treasures new and old,” and shower them on their guests.
And you know what, that’s just what they did! In the book of Acts, you’ll see these same disciples recounting the words of Jesus and sharing them near and far to all who would listen. They got it! And then they gave it away!
How about you? Do you understand the things Jesus has spoken to you this week? Do you get it? Do you understand that the kingdom of heaven is the most exquisite of all things and that everything else pales in comparison? Do you understand what awaits those who turn down the invitation to the kingdom of heaven?
What should you do with the knowledge you have received? Are you willing to give it all away – as the disciples did? Don’t keep these treasures for yourself. Share them with those that come under your hospitality and care! Pray for God to give you an opening to share with those people and to give you the ability to listen as well as the words to speak.
