For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. (1 Peter 3:12)
Peter wrote these words as he was nearing the end of his life. I can envision him thinking back
and reflecting on times when God had illustrated these truths in his life. These words no doubt
gave him great comfort - and they can comfort us too as we deal with our daily struggles.
Peter had experienced the watchful eye of Jesus on several occasions – like the time when
Jesus called Peter out of the boat to come to him and Peter walked on water towards Jesus
(Matthew 14:22-33). As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to do the impossible.
But when he became distracted by the wind and waves, he began to sink. Yet even as Peter
faltered, Jesus' eyes were on him, and He reached out to save him – a lesson Peter would
never forget.
Peter also knew that God's ears were always open to the prayers of the righteous. Peter
experienced the power of prayer many times in his life. Acts 12:5-17 recounts when Peter was
imprisoned and facing imminent death at the hands of Herod – while at the same moment,
fellow believers were earnestly praying for him. In response to those prayers, God sent an angel
to miraculously free Peter from his chains. Surely, Peter had many other answered prayers to
recall as he remembered God’s faithfulness in delivering him.
Peter was a man who valued justice. He was always trying to protect - even to the detriment of
God’s plan. In the garden when Jesus was arrested, it was Peter who tried to come to Jesus’
rescue and serve justice as he saw fit. It was undoubtedly a difficult lesson for Peter to learn; yet
with time, he came to realize that justice was God’s to administer, not his.
These are lessons we can all appreciate as we deal with hard times and difficult situations.
Know this: the Lord sees you, He hears your prayers, and He is just in all that He does.
