Gideon’s story (Judges 6-7) reveals how God can use ordinary people like you and me to do incredible works for His glory. Before Israel had a human king, Israel was ruled through a loose confederation of tribes. Since everyone did what was right in his own eyes (Judges 17:6 and 21:25), the people often strayed from God’s law and participated in the worship of pagan gods.
This idolatry was evil in the sight of God. Therefore, He would punish Israel by raising up a neighboring nation to oppress them. When the oppression became intolerable, Israel would repent of their sin and cry out to God for deliverance. God would then send someone to deliver the nation from their oppressors, and Israel would be at peace —at least until they repeated the cycle.
In Gideon’s day, the Midianites had oppressed Israel for seven years; and once again, Israel cried out to God. It was time for God to send a deliverer, and Gideon would be that “mighty man of valor”. No one was more surprised with this assignment than Gideon. When he learned of God’s purpose for him, he replied,
“how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family”
(Judges 6:15).
While Gideon was looking at his inability to do the job, God was considering his human weakness and humility as his greatest asset. If God would reveal His gracious power to Israel, it had to be unmistakably clear that the victory was wrought by God—not by Gideon’s ability.
Gideon was willing to serve, but only when he was assured that God was the one calling him for this task. First, Gideon had to put his own house in order. Risking his own life, Gideon obeyed God and made a sacrifice to the Lord on an altar built by the wood he tore down from a pagan altar and shrine. Then, after asking God twice to confirm His plans using a wool fleece, Gideon was convinced and ready to go.
God first paired down the original army from 32,000 to 10,000 by allowing fearful men to leave. God then paired the army down again to only 300. Now, with Gideon’s army of 300 men armed with only trumpets, pitchers and torches, God defeated the Midianite army of 135,000 men by causing confusion among them, so they turned on each other with their swords.
God is looking to glorify Himself today through ordinary people who are fully dependent on Him, who believe He is with them, and who are ready to charge forth in His name! Are you that someone?
