So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” (Joshua 4:4-7)
God reveals Himself to His people by what He does. You come to know God by experience when God works through you to accomplish His purposes.
For the Israelites, God had parted the Jordan River so they could cross over on dry ground to the land God had promised them. This was such an important milestone for the Israelites and their children to remember that Joshua had the Israelites set up twelve memorial stones to mark this momentous occasion.
I wasn’t very interested in history until I began working at the Lexington Rescue Mission. My whole attitude about keeping historical records, photographs, articles, videos, and other mementos changed when I recognized the amazing things God was doing through everyone who played a part at the Mission. I never wanted to forget what we were so privileged to be a part of. One day we would ask God for help with a concern; and usually a short time later, we would be thanking Him for His answer. It’s been quite a journey of faith-building as we saw God actively working around and through us.
The Bible has many names for God that reveal various ways God works out His plans through His people. For example, Jehovah-Jireh means "The Lord Will Provide" and refers to God's provision and faithfulness; Jehovah-Rapha means "The Lord Heals"; El Shaddai means "God Almighty" or "God All-Sufficient." Whatever title we use, it reminds us of how God has shown us who He is.
As you obey God, you’ll experience Him at work, and it will mean something very important to you. Take the time to set up your very own “memorial stone”, just as the Israelites did. Your “stone” should occasionally remind you of the faithfulness of God. And when you need His help again to meet a similar need, you’ll be a little more confident that God will meet that need too!
