This week’s theme is God is always at work around you.
I’m rather proud of my handyman skills. I’m not one of those savants who can fix anything, but I can fix a lot of stuff (especially once I find the right YouTube video demonstration). My handiwork does not rise to the level of art like some, but I generally get the job done. But recent events compel me to make a confession: even when I fix something successfully, I rarely finish the job completely, at least not right away.
Last year I installed a new front door. This year I’m renovating a bathroom. But the trim around the front door never got painted. Why didn’t I finish that last step on the door first before tearing apart the bathroom? I don’t have a good answer; and every time I walk out the front door, I am irritated by the unpainted trim.
At work I have a folder of emails named “Retention Pond” where I put things that I want to do someday but aren’t as important as everything else on my plate. It’s well intentioned and it’s a happy day when I get in there and knock some things out; but honestly, more tasks leave my Retention Pond folder because they became obsolete than because I finished them.
Knowing how to fix something is one thing. Putting in the work to get the thing fixed is another. And seeing things through to completion may be the hardest part – at least for me. Thankfully when God starts a project, He sees it all the way through, even if it takes a while.
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6 HCSB)
In this verse, Paul teaches us that the God who is always working won’t just finish the work He began in us, but He will perfect it. At the end of the chapter, Paul anticipates that because of the work God is doing in us, we’ll join in.
Just one thing: Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, working side by side for the faith that comes from the gospel…
(Philippians 1:27 HCSB)
God is always working, and He’ll finish and perfect what He starts. He wants us to join in, so let’s go.
