Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25–26).
When Jesus arrived in Bethany after the death of Lazarus, He wasn’t just bringing words of comfort—He was offering life itself. In His response to Martha, grieving the loss of her brother, Jesus didn’t simply say that He could bring resurrection. Instead, He declared, “I am the resurrection and the life.” In this statement, He revealed His ultimate power over death and His ability to transform despair into hope.
Faith in Jesus means much more than waiting for a distant promise of life after death. It is placing our trust in the One who brings life here and now—spiritual life, eternal life, and the assurance that even death cannot separate us from His love. The resurrection of Lazarus was more than one family’s miracle; it was a sign that Jesus has the power to bring life where there was once death, both physically and spiritually.
This truth invites us to ask ourselves the same question Jesus posed to Martha: “Do you believe this?” Do we believe that Jesus is greater than the finality we associate with death? Do we trust Him to hold both our lives and our eternity in His hands? For those who believe, there is no fear of death. Though we may face physical death, Jesus promises that it will not have the final word for those whose faith rests in Him.
In moments when life feels uncertain or when death and loss feel overwhelming, Jesus’ words anchor us in the hope of the gospel. Faith in Him offers more than just comfort—it offers victory. We are reminded that because Jesus Himself overcame death through His resurrection, we too can live with confidence in the eternal life He promises to all who trust Him.
Let us live today in the hope and assurance of Jesus’ words. He is the resurrection and the life—not just in the future, but right here, right now.
Jesus, thank You for being the resurrection and the life. In You, I have hope that goes beyond the grave and life that is full and eternal. Help me to trust in Your promises, especially in moments of fear and doubt. Strengthen my faith as I live in the light of Your victory over death. Amen.
