Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” (John 20:24-25)
Why do you believe what you believe? Could you give a persuasive reason for your faith, or is your faith in faith itself? In a court of law, there are different legal standards of proof. But regardless of which standard is being applied to a particular case, evidence must be presented and evaluated to render a just verdict. In other words, the reasons for one’s decision must be carefully considered.
It’s no different with our faith. God never told us to believe Him without good reason. To do so would reveal our gullibility rather than our faith. Instead, our faith is based on an historical Jesus, which no serious scholar now denies existed, and a highly reliable historical record from many eyewitnesses about His life. These witnesses report the many miracles He did that proved His claims of deity. For even Nicodemus, a leading Pharisee told Him, “Rabbi, we know you are from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him” (John 3:2).
But God, who chose to add the final proof of His satisfaction of Jesus’ work of redemption for repentant sinners, raised Jesus from the grave on Easter morning. What other religious faith can convincingly claim that their founder survived the grave?
The Apostle Thomas may be criticized by some for not believing the other disciples when they told him they had seen the Lord. However, I think Thomas was simply being diligent about His faith. He was unwilling to believe until he had the proof he considered sufficient to fully justify his faith.
What about you? The Bible tells us:
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope you have (1 Peter 3:15b).
Our faith is a rational faith for God is a rational God. Faith without the support of good reason has no solid foundation.
If you are unsure why you believe what you believe, it’s time to search for understanding. God’s Word will stand up to all the scrutiny you can give. Genuinely seek the truth and you will certainly not be disappointed.
