Division

This week we’re looking at John chapter seven.
Would you agree with me that we are living in a divisive time? If I asked for an example of a divisive issue, you (and I) would probably think of some recent political issue, and it would be related to the United States.
But we’re just not that special. To borrow a phrase from Mrs. Potts in Beauty in the Beast, it’s a tale as old as time. Divisive times? How about that time when the youth murder rate was 50%?
Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. (Genesis 4:8 HCSB)
Our nation had a Revolutionary War and a Civil War. Those were divisive.
The United States of America, which I love, is approaching two-hundred fifty years old. That sounds like a long time until you consider some modern people have lived almost half that long. I have personally lived 20% of US history myself – not a trivial amount. My rough math indicates that since Jesus walked the earth, the USA existed for just 12.5% of it. Reflecting on this reminds me that what might seem like a big deal to me today is probably not that important relative to human history, much less God’s eternity.
When I’m tempted to say something dramatic like times have never been so divisive, I need to have a little humility and perspective.
When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This really is the Prophet!” Others said, “This is the Messiah!” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does He? Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David’s offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David once lived?” So a division occurred among the crowd because of Him. Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him. (John 7:40-44 HCSB)
It is difficult to escape people arguing about politics or sports or religion, and much of it is on par with a tired toddler throwing himself on the ground and having a fit. I need to remind myself that most of the noise around us is just people clamoring for attention and instead focus on the day unity will come.
For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me, and every tongue will give praise to God. (Romans 14:11 HCSB)
