The people walking in darkness have seen a great light, a light has dawned on those living in
the land of darkness. (Isaiah 9:2)
Darkness. Many of us are afraid of it. We may even sleep with a light on to comfort us. Most of
us stay away from darkness when we can in order to be safe. All of us experience darkness in
some form or fashion just about every day.
One of the effects of darkness is that it makes us question our judgment. “Did I really see that?”
“Is that door open or closed?” Darkness causes us to mistake one thing for another. Almost as if
we are living under the influence, our decisions are not based completely in reality, but are
shrouded in darkness.
I have a closet in my home where I keep my coats, hats, and gloves. I often found myself unable
to locate what I was looking for -- or pulling out the wrong thing. Why? There wasn’t a light in
the closet. The answer? A motion-activated stick-on light! Now, much like the light in a
refrigerator, I open the door and the light comes on. I shut the door and moments later, it’s off.
In fact, it has worked so well, I bought one just like it for another closet!
I had tamed that little bit of darkness in my life with a little light and it allowed me to see things
as they really are, not as I perceived them to be.
Read Ephesians 5:6-13.
In this passage, Paul picks up on Isaiah’s thought from Isaiah 9:2 and carries it further. Now that
we have the light, Paul encourages us not to participate in what takes place in the dark – but
instead to shine our light to expose the truth of what is happening in the darkness -- with the
hope that God’s light will shine in the process.
People make poor decisions when they are in the dark. They don’t have all the information they
need in the dark. Jesus tames our darkness. He helps us see things as they really are and gives us
the light we need to make a proper judgment.
The light that Jesus brought to the world at Christmas is to be used by us today to expose and
make visible what takes place in the darkness so that it can be seen and understood completely.
The hoped for outcome is that people that were once asleep in darkness will rise to life in the
light of Christ.
Where is darkness around you? Shine the light of Christmas on it.
Who is walking in darkness around you? Shine the light of Jesus in their life!
