We recently had a new gas station open in our neighborhood. We don’t have a lot of businesses in our
neighborhood, so people are very excited when something new opens. In this case, once the gas pumps
were installed, people kept trying to stop and get gas; they thought the gas station was already open!
The gas station took several measures to try to remind people that they weren’t open. Some of the
things they tried included:
Despite all these efforts, people kept stopping by the store. The only way to satisfy everyone was to
finally open the store!
We get so excited about things that ultimately don’t matter. But when it’s time to proclaim things that
are much more important with a longer-lasting impact, we are much quieter.
In Luke 19, we find Jesus entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to triumphant cheers from His disciples
and followers, who said in Luke 19:38: “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”
The Pharisees did not appreciate this and had this comment: ”Teacher, rebuke your followers for
saying things like that!” (Luke 19:39)
Jesus replied: “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” (Luke 19:40)
All of creation is made to worship! But what are you worshiping? When people see you getting
passionate about something, is it about Kingdom matters or things that will fade away over time?
This week, take time to reflect on what you are passionate about and how this passion impacts your
family and friends. Also, ask yourself if praising God is a priority for you. Are you cheering for God, or will
a rock need to take your place?
