This week we’re starting the Christmas season in Matthew.
In the early 1980’s I, along with most other boys my age, was a big fan of the television show
“The A-Team.” The premise of the show was that four members of an Army special forces unit
had been wrongly accused of a crime. They escaped prison and worked as soldiers of fortune in
Los Angeles while simultaneously evading capture and trying to clear their names.
Yes, even we young teenage boys knew it was ridiculous that they were “in hiding” but drove a
cool van with a big red stripe on it and Mr. T wore five pounds of gold chains. In the real world
they’d have made it about four blocks before being recaptured. I bring all this up because there
is one famous quote from the show that you still hear sometimes today, which is “I love it when
a plan comes together.”
First, let’s look at Joseph’s plan:
The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been engaged
to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant by the
Holy Spirit. So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace
her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. (Matthew 1:18-19 HCSB)
But God had other ideas.
But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him
in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife,
because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son,
and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
(Matthew 1:20-21 HCSB)
Joseph’s plan was that of a righteous man. It was a good plan! Based on what he knew at the
time, it was truly a compassionate and loving response. But God had other, much bigger, plans.
We should always seek God’s will and pursue the plans that we think are righteous. But from
Joseph’s example, we can see that just because things aren’t going our way doesn’t mean God
isn’t paying attention or isn’t working out His own plan.
And He loves it when a plan comes together.
