For years she waited. For years she prayed. She searched for answers and wondered if she had done something wrong. She relied on God and continued to serve Him. Her name meant “God is a promise/ vow.” She and her godly husband trusted that God knew best.
They wanted a child, and God said no. Or maybe He said wait.
When the angel appeared in the temple to tell Zachariah that Elizabeth would have a son, he could not believe it. But Elizabeth had a different reaction:
After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. (Luke 1:23-25)
What would those five months have been like? Did she recall all her prayers for this child? Did she search scripture for prophecies about the child she was carrying and of the coming Messiah?
The years of waiting and the months in seclusion prepared her for an important role: the mentor of the mother of the Messiah.
When Mary came to her as a scared young woman:
Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” (Luke 1:42-45)
Mary then stayed with Elizabeth for three months – months when Elizabeth was able to pour into Mary’s life. As both women rejoiced in their pregnancies and contemplated who their sons were to become, there must have been discussions of God’s plan of salvation, the prophecies, and their unique roles as mothers to these boys.
Elizabeth’s prayerful journey and time in seclusion prepared her to help Mary face what it meant to be pregnant before married, prepare John the Baptist to make way for the Messiah, and (BEAUTIFULLY!!) prepare Mary to raise the Messiah. Wow! One can’t help but wonder if Mary brought Jesus to play with John and to meet Elizabeth. Imagine the greeting Elizabeth had for Jesus!
The waiting had a purpose. If God answered her prayers sooner, would Mary have come to stay with her? Her search for answers had come to an end. If she had stopped trusting God, would she have been the mother of John the Baptist?
What prayers are you praying? Are there answers that you seek today? There’s purpose in God’s delays; trust Him and continue to follow Him. Your God is a promise, too.
