Behind every good man after God’s own heart, is a woman after God’s own heart. Well, not always, but in the case of a young man who would be king, this was true.
Samuel anointed David to be Israel’s second king while Saul was still on the throne. Despite faithful service, including the defeat of Goliath, a deep friendship with Jonathan and the ability to sooth Saul’s heart, David was hated by Saul. Saul attempted to kill him numerous times. Thus, life was hard for David and his followers; they were constantly on the run.
And then Samuel died. When Samuel had anointed David at God’s direction, he looked past the outer appearance and saw a king instead of a shepherd boy.
When David was insulted by Nabal shortly thereafter, he did not act like a man after God’s own heart. Instead, he vowed revenge. As soon as he received word about Nabal, he told his men to strap on their swords.
Nabal’s wife, Abigail, learned what had happened. Hastily, she found food to send to David’s men and came to meet David. She was nervous because she knew that David was angry with her husband. After apologizing for Nabal, she stated:
“The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting dynasty for my lord (David), because you fight the Lord’s battles, and no wrongdoing will be found in you as long as you live. Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life, the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurl away as from the pocket of a sling.” (I Samuel 25:28-29)
Her confident faith in God reminded David of who he was in relationship to God at a time when he couldn’t see it for himself. Perhaps he was discouraged after Samuel’s death or because of living in constant fear of Saul. Abigail snapped David out of his blood-thirsty desire for revenge by reminding him of God’s protection. God would hurl David’s enemies away just as a stone is slung out of a sling. David just needed to trust God. David praised God for sending Abigail to meet him to stop him from bloodshed.
Everyone encounters times of despair like David. At those times, people are susceptible to making poor decisions and forgetting what God has done for them. Like Abigail, we need to go beyond ourselves and offer encouraging words of faith.
Do you need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness? To whom can you offer words of encouragement today?
