The holiday celebrations are over for another year. The manger scenes and nativity sets are
packed away, and Valentine candy is already on display at Walmart – although I try to avoid the
candy aisle.
But let’s not pack God away for another year. Even though the man-made reminders of His perfect
gift, Jesus, are packed away, He is still with us and should be celebrated all year long! Continue
worshipping in church, not just on special occasions. Sing the songs, read your Bible. Pray.
Reflect the joy of your salvation. Be kind and generous.
Now is when we get to experience all the reminders of His presence that come directly from Him. We
can see beauty all around us, if we choose to look for it.
Maybe this time of year is hard for you because it’s quiet and cold. The days are short, and we
don’t see the sun a lot. But God is still with us. Just like Elijah, we can experience God’s
whisper.
And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the
sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and
went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him
and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:12-13 ESV)
Personally, I really like this time of year. It is quiet, and the snow looks beautiful as it falls and
covers the grass and shines in the trees. Have you ever noticed how the world sounds different
when snow is on the ground? You are not imagining it; everything IS quieter! Freshly fallen snow
absorbs sound that is normally reflected off hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt. I think of
snow as God’s way of muffling some of the distractions that get between Him and us.
When it snows, the world gets quieter -- a perfect time to listen for God’s whisper. Let’s not miss
it!

Kentuckian and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. She worships and serves at the
Georgetown campus with her husband David.
