Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, according
to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and
burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of
incense. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the
altar of incense. And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard,
and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. (Luke 1:8-13 ESV)
The priests had been organized into divisions by King David for service in the temple. Each of
the divisions would serve on a rotating basis in Jerusalem, to administer the daily activities of
the temple. Because the number of priests was greater than the number of daily duties, it was
their practice to assign duties by lot.
On this occasion, by the providence of God (Proverbs 16:33), the lot to offer the Incense
Offering fell to Zechariah. This was a once in a lifetime event, the pinnacle of service for a priest
such as Zechariah. For the priest to offer the Incense was to stand alone in the presence of God
on behalf of His chosen people.
As Zechariah is offering the Incense, an angel of the Lord appears beside him. Zechariah
reacts, just as all of us would, in fear. In that moment, the first words spoken from Heaven in
400 years are these: “Do not be afraid.” The angel’s message is as unexpected as his
appearance.
The angel tells Zechariah his prayers have been heard – he and Elizabeth with have a son.
They had prayed for a son, but that was years ago in their youth. At this moment, it is likely
Zechariah was offering prayers on behalf of the nation, and those prayers likely included a plea
for the long-awaited Messiah.
God delayed in answering Zechariah and Elizabeth’s prayer for a son until the fullness of time
was come, so their son would play a vital role in preparing the way for the Messiah (Luke 1:14-
17). God answered in a way they likely never imagined.
When you find yourself waiting for an answer to prayer, remember this: our timing and God’s
timing don’t always align, but His timing is perfect. It just might be that the answer to your prayer
has a far greater purpose than you could ever imagine. Waiting is difficult, but in that waiting
trust Him and watch what He will do.
