This week we’re visiting the 6th Reality of the Experiencing God study: You must make major adjustments in your life to join God in what He is doing.
Sometimes the major adjustments that God requires of you are in your thoughts – to prepare you for what He’s asking you to do!
Several weeks ago, I was asked to participate on a panel in our church services. My first thought was, “I don’t think so!” And I mentally conjured up lots of “valid” reasons for declining the opportunity. Here are a few:
1 – I knew we would be sitting on tall stools, so there was the possibility that I might just fall off.
2 – My voice is rather soft – and even if I had something to say, no one would hear me.
3 – I’m no big deal.
4 – I don’t have anything important to say.
I didn’t just privately ponder; I expressed the first two concerns out loud. Those concerns were addressed by some of our staff who assured me that (1) they wouldn’t let me fall off the stool, and (2) microphones would be amped up to accommodate my soft voice.
The other two I discussed with my Father, and He tenderly addressed those as well. About concern #3, He rebuked me for even thinking that anyone created by His hand was “no big deal.” He reminded me that I’m “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).
About concern #4, I sensed Him challenging me with the thought that He just might have something important to say THROUGH me. And I sensed that it wasn’t MY words that were important – it was the power He put behind my words that would cause them to land.
And THEN, in addition to those concerns, there was always the speaking in public issue, which I did mention to my Father, whose Spirit awakened many verses, including this one:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
So… I said “yes.” And with God holding me with that “righteous right hand,” I adjusted my thoughts to align with His – and actually enjoyed being a part of that day.
Sometimes the major adjustments we must make are not always hugely dramatic or obvious to the world – like trusting God to part the Red Sea. Sometimes the major adjustment is fully trusting God to be all you need in the moment.
