Have you ever wondered how to pray for yourself? I’m not talking about praying in times of crisis; I’m talking about regular prayers for a consistent faith walk.
Paul’s prayer for the Philippians could be a good model -- a list of prayer points for our personal faith walk!
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11)
Point #1: Grow in love – let your love abound!
Question: Is your love for the Lord and His Word growing – even abounding? Do you find it hard to love the prickly people on your path? Are you praying for God’s love to so fill you that it spills out on others?
Point #2: Grow in knowledge - seek to know God more intimately by reading His Word and spending time with Him.
Question: Are you still learning? Are you still surprised and delighted with new insights from God’s Word?
Point #3: Grow in discernment - be sensitive to the convicting of the Holy Spirit.
Question: Are you discerning? Do red flags pop up in your mind when you encounter something that is contrary to the truth of God’s Word?
Point #4: Approve the things that are excellent - align our priorities with what God considers to be important.
Question: Do your priorities reflect the standard that God expects of His followers?
Point #5: Live a life of genuine faith and integrity – sincere and without offense.
Question: Is your weekday life consistent with the life you portray on Sunday?
Point #6: Make room in your heart for the fruits of righteousness – kick out of your heart and mind those things that we would consider “rotten fruit.”
Question: Is your life bearing the right kind of fruit? (Galatians 5:22-23)
Point #7: Examine the motivation for our actions. Who is glorified by what you’re doing?
Question: Do your actions draw attention and glory to yourself or do they point others to God?
Based on these prayer points, let’s pray this prayer for ourselves:
And this I pray, that MY love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that I may approve the things that are excellent, that I may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11, Judy’s Personalized Version)
